WE ARE STRONG AND MANY!

We refuse to be intimidated and bullied! The owner of this store attempted to get a Federal temporary restraining order (TRO) against this protest. It was denied. Our first amendment rights allow us to protest this store.

This is the owner of San Diego Puppy, who was forced to close after the City of San Diego passed an ordinance banning the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores. He has now moved his store to Oceanside and is nearing completion of an additional store in National City.
We will protest any store that ;makes money from the suffering of animals.
Adopt Don't Shop!

Victory! The Sale of Dogs, Cats, and Rabbits Banned in San Diego!

In Defense of AnimalsOn Tuesday, the San Diego City Council passed an ordinance to ban the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits in city “pet” stores. Last September, the San Diego Animal Defense Team (ADT) gave the city council a petition with forty pages of signatures requesting this ordinance. ADT joined with In Defense of Animals, San Diego Humane Society, Animal Protection and Rescue League, and other organizations to garner attention and support for the ordinance. More than 75 animal-related businesses and animal advocacy groups signed on to support the ban.
Pet stores get animals from commercial breeding facilities, including puppy mills, where animals are imprisoned for life in cramped, filthy conditions and used as breeding machines until they can no longer reproduce. Three to four million animals are killed in American shelters every year because of the difficulty of securing enough good homes for them. Please adopt rather than buy animal companions to break this cycle of suffering, misery, and death.

Hey California Pets Carlsbad -- Remember the Spring Uprising!

April 26, 2010

INSIDE, OUTSIDE, AND ALL AROUND THE MALL! CALIFORNIA PETS PROTEST 4/25

The California Pets puppy store in Carlsbad was targeted by the SD Animal Defense Team with a two hour protest on Sunday April 25.

A large number of animal advocates from San Diego County and Orange County protested at the intersection of Highway 78 and El Camino Real, leading to the mall. They handed out flyers and talked to consumers about California Pets, puppy stores and puppy mills. At the same time, an anonymous freeway blogger also hung five giant banners with similiar slogans on the bridge which could be seen from Highway 78.

The Animal Defense Team then processed in an attention-getting parade. We carried signs and marched behind the large Ban Puppy Stores banner through the entire length of the Carlsbad Plaza Camino Real Shopping Center, going up the escalator and ending at the front door of California Pets.

Some demonstrators continued to protest in front of the store while
a large number went inside to document  the number of puppies, their ages, breeds, ID numbers and breeders. California Pets Carlsbad has 55 dogs from 41 different breeders. The majority are in Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas and Oklahoma, notorious puppy mill states. This store also has a location in
North County Fair in Escondido.

We are now conducting investigations into these breeders.
BOYCOTT CALIFORNIA PETS!

Jogging Your Memory About California Pets

Do NOT let the Carlsbad branch of this store be grandfathered in! The Carlsbad City Council is making that decision right now.

10 News: San Diego Pet Stores Selling Puppy Mill Dogs!

Humane Society Of United States Says Californians

Bought Nearly 9,000 Puppies From Missouri Mills In 2009

10news.com
POSTED: 4:46 pm PDT October 15, 2010
UPDATED: 7:08 pm PDT October 15, 2010

SAN DIEGO -- The Humane Society of the United States said California residents bought nearly 9,000 puppies from the puppy mill capitol of the U.S. last year.

According to state-issued health certificates sent to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, nearly 9,000 puppies were shipped from Missouri brokers and breeders between January 2009 and December 2009 to California. They were shipped to pet stores or directly to pet owners responding to Internet or newspaper advertisements. A conservative estimate of the retail value of these dogs approaches $9 million.

The data suggests two-thirds of the puppies were shipped to Southern California, with 763 puppies ending up in San Diego County.

"Despite our reputation as a pet-loving culture, the evidence is in that Californians don't yet understand the perils of buying puppies online or at pet stores. California consumers continue to provide dollars that help drive Missouri's factory-style production of man's best friend; in fact, many are supporting some of the most deplorable facilities in the state," said the HSUS' California Senior State Director Jennifer Fearing, who led the analysis. "It's easy to fall in love with an adorable puppy displayed online or at the mall, but behind the cuteness is cruelty no pet lover could support."

Missouri puppy mill dogs were purchased by:

ADT: Corrections to the above article -- Pet Works is located in Grossmont Shopping Center at 5500 Grossmont Center Dr. The Puppy time store in El Cajon has closed and has reopened as Pups and Pets at 50 Town Center Parkway, Santee.  As of October 30, 2010, the Pups and Pets store had 11 puppies for sale from Missouri.

The above statistics from the HSUS and Channel 10 News only count dogs brought in from Missouri puppy mills, not the total numbers of dogs purchased from dog factory farms by each pet store. The Animal Defense Team has protested at California Pets, Puparazzi,, Pups and Pets  and at Pet Works dozens of times in 2009.

Best Friends article on our ban! Read and share!

Pet sale ban in San Diego

Read all about it ! Thanks for your great article, Best Friends, and especially thanks to Elizabeth Oreck, the Best Friends National Puppy Mills Campaign Manager, for coming down from Los Angeles to help us get this ban passed.

July 24, 2013

It is done!

San Diego July 23, 2013
There is dancing in the streets tonight as San Diego becomes the lucky # 13 city in California to ban the sale of puppies in any pet stores within the city. And... just because it is right, we also added cats and rabbits to the ban. Today was the second (and final)reading of the ban by the San Diego City Council. It was pulled for discussion because there were public comment slips turned in by the opposition.
Thanks to the great 6 City Council members who voted YES today. (Sherri Lightner and Scott Sherman sadly voted on the side of puppy mills.) David Salinas, owner of San Diego Puppy, called together 13 people to make public comments against the ordinance. Those included the cat fanciers, a member of the La Mesa City Council, the owner of Pet Market, David Salinas and others. When questioned by Lightner, Dr. Gary Weitzman, Director of the San Diego Humane Society and Dawn Danielson, Director of the County Department of Animal Services did a great job of explaining the technicalities of the ordinance.

Thanks to everyone who was there today! Thanks to everyone who made this happen! It will go into effect 30 days after the Mayor signs. He has 10 business days to sign.
WooHoo! VICTORY for the puppies
and their mothers!

July 12, 2013

Finally! No more puppy mill sales in San Diego!

VICTORY!!!
The ordinance to ban the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in San Diego pet stores was passed by the City Council yesterday! Those of us in the Council meeting room cheered with joy when the unanimous vote came in. We have worked long and hard for this and that includes every one of you receiving this message.
We know what you did. We know how much you cared. We celebrate this victory with YOU! It is because of you that puppy mill pups will no longer be sold in the city of San Diego.
With full hearts we thank you.

For those who couldn't be with us yesterday, we thought you might like to read the presentation, given by Janice Hatch on behalf of the San Diego Animal Defense Team, as part of the working group who gave this the final push. In addition, we had over 15 speakers lined up to weigh in during the public comment section to cover every aspect of the outrage of puppy mills. They spoke with one voice -- the voice of compassion and knowledge. They put it over the top!

The San Diego Animal Defense Team is a grassroots group that has been working exclusively on the local puppy mill problem since 2008. Our focus is the connection between puppy mills and San Diego city and county pet stores. We have held hundreds of educational outreach events and protests at all of the pet stores selling puppies, including Pet Works in Grossmont Center, Pups and Pets in Santee, California Pets in Escondido and Carlsbad, Puparazzi in Mission Valley Shopping Center, Puppy Stars in Clairemont, Naedeen Puppies in Oceanside, Pet Place in Rolando and San Diego Puppy in Grantville.

We documented the puppies in each store. We investigated and researched their breeders. What we found is disturbing.

Every San Diego store that we investigated uses puppy mill breeders. We have been able to identify these breeders through information given to us by people who bought the puppies, which we then tracked through a central data base and USDA reports.

Many of the same mass-producing puppy mills supply all of the San Diego area stores.

(slide) One is the infamous Stonehenge Kennel in West Point, Iowa. 1,118 breeding dogs are trapped in cages in the buildings you see on the aerial view slide.
(slide) Here's what you see when you look inside. They have multiple USDA violations of the most basic kinds of humane care.

In addition to educational outreach and investigations, we sent a letter to each store, offering to help them change to a humane model so they could continue their businesses cruelty-free. I have a copy here if you want one. We don't want the stores to close. We also don't want them to build their business on the backs of suffering animals.

We offered to provide contacts with breed rescues and shelters. We offered to promote the store. We offered to provide additional information about professional  and public relations volunteers who would help them promote their new humane model stores at no cost.

We are sorry to report that no one was interested.

It's important that we all keep in mind these are businesses that do not sell products. They sell living, breathing, feeling animals. The animals feel pain and fear and they need the comfort and companionship of humans. We hope you agree with us that San Diego does not want businesses that are fundamentally based on cruelty to animals.

This is a multi-billion $$$ industry, with profits at multiple levels -- the puppy mills to the brokers to the puppy stores. Everyone wins at this money game but the animals. And they lose every time.

This ordinance is about protecting them. Please do the right thing. Vote YES.
